Scrapbooks: The Perfect Presents

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Scrapbooking is slowly making its way into the hearts of many Americans. It is a great way to bring people together, preserve memories, and give a heart-felt gift. custom scrapbookingaren’t hard to find and are generally not very expensive. Making your own scrapbook is often cheaper than scrapbooking supplies done by a business. Making a scrapbook can take a great deal of time, but it truly is the ultimate gift. We have always been told that it’s the thought that counts, and a scrapbook shows lots of thought and love. Additionally, scrapbooks provide a fun way of looking at the past. Heartwarming images and memorabilia are brought together using whimsical designs and layouts. It is never a bad idea to give someone a scrapbook.

One great event to give a scrapbook for is high school graduation. I made one for my older brother, and it made him tear up. A great way to begin the scrapbook is to take everything important during their four years of high school and designate a page for each. I made a sports page, and academic page, a page for his senior trip, and a page for each of his 6 closest friends. The friend pages included letters written by each friend. This was the most touching part of the scrapbook; however it took a lot of planning. A lot of planning and thought goues into scrapbooks, but they are fun and meaningful.

In addition, creating a scrapbook for a wedding anniversary can be very touching. They are great gifts for milestones such as 20 or 40 years of marriage. Putting letters into this type of scrapbook is also a good idea. You can have close friends and family members write to them about their experiences with the couple and just how they see the two people. Getting pictures from the wedding, early years of their marriage and their kids is not only necessary, but an adventure!. To do a scrapbook such as this, you have to be close with the couple in order to make a connection on a personal level.

Lastly, creating a scrapbook for your young ones as they age is tons of fun. This gives the individual something to look back at to remind them of their childhood, and it can be a fun parent-child activity. These are usually begun when the child is a baby with baby pictures and “first” moments. However, as the kid ages, parents and children can work on it with one another. It’s the ultimate rainy day activity.

Some occasions are tricky to pick gifts for, but a scrapbook is almost always appropriate. A scrapbook can be formal or informal, serious or whimsical, expensive or easy-done. The best part about receiving a scrapbook is knowing that the person thought about their gift. Taking the time to create something that comes from the heart is a trait someone will appreciate. In addition, a well-done scrapbook is really timeless. It can hold so much nostalgia for a person in such a great package! When you don’t know what gift to choose for mother’s day, Valentine ’s Day or graduation, I highly advise falling back upon the scrapbook plan. It is foolproof.

Is Being “Plugged-In” Bad for Us?

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

The internet has changed daily life in so many aspects, and still is. The way people communicate, do work, share information, and even travel has all been digitalized. Everyone seems to be connected nowadays. Some one in India can get in touch with someone in America with the click of a button. Even small things like Scrapbooking albums have changed, instead of Scrapbooking on paper, people scrapbook internet collections. The internet can be used by virtually all people. There are users as young as four years old to senor citizens. This openness in the world can also be dangerous. In the past five years we have seen a climb in inter-net related crimes. It is a very sharp double sided sword, extreme good and extreme bad can come from the internet.
If used constructively, the internet is a powerful instrument. It can be a great mean to get in touch with with distant loved ones. Sites such as my space and face book connect people. Personally, I wouldn’t have one if it weren’t for the fact that it allows me to keep in touch with relatives in Maryland and friends in Minnesota and Palestine. I have a family friend whose son visited Chile and they used face book to keep in touch, send photos and document his journey. If it weren’t for the internet, he would have barely been able to talk to his son for three months because there was no cell phone service in Chile.
However, if used inappropriately or in a dangerous fashion, the internet is dangerous. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to completely control predators on the internet. So, allowing children on the internet can be dangerous if they misuse it. Learning proper internet safety guidelines is pivotal to using the internet wisely. Also, parents need to block inappropriate or unfit sites from their children.
The internet can also be dangerous for adults. Sites such as Craig’s list and eBay are playgrounds for scams, con artist and predators. On eBay, being fooled is easy and you may end up buying a faulty product or something that you never get. Ebay scams have become an art, however it’s completely avoidable if careful. In the news recently, there have been murderers and inappropriate users rampant on Craig’s list. The Police can’t patrol this site, so these things can occur. Millions of people are selling and buying on this site, it is easy to get away unnoticed. Children should not have access websites like this, and adults should be careful.
When used correctly, the internet is an amazing invention. Sometimes however, our plugged in world can be for the worse. Cyber space is a huge place that can’t be patrolled easily, so lots of predators and con artists make their way into it. It is easy to fall into their traps too. However, if you practice simple safety rules, it is also a piece of cake to avoid them. When communicating on the internet, never talk to someone you don’t recognize. Never post personal information for websites that aren’t confidential. If you follow these simple guidelines, {the internet can be a fun, useful pace for you|you will only gain positive things from the internet
